Government-Led Peace Talks in Delhi: Meitei, Kuki, and Naga Leaders Meet to Resolve Manipur’s Ongoing Ethnic Violence and Tensions

In its most critical decision so far in the wake of the ethnic violence that the state of Manipur has been suffering from, the Ministry of Home Affairs has sent invitations to the chiefs of the Meitei, Kuki, and Naga communities for a meeting at New Delhi. This would be the first time-ever, according to Centre sources, that a government-leaftar initiative toward a peaceful solution to the conflict that already spilled over 200 lives in May of last year.

It has been confirmed that main Naga legislators, including Awangbow Newmai, L Dikho, and Ram Muivah, will participate in the meeting from Naga People’s Front, the main BJP ally. Reports indicate several Meitei lawmakers all allies of the BJP are returning to Delhi. Still, at this hour, it is unclear how many Kuki representatives shall attend.

The meeting marks a government commitment to holding dialogue and toward an amicable solution. He expressed hope and added that they were called upon to find all ways towards peace. L Dikho also maintained that all communities’ interest must find a mention in the talks.

However, it was opposed by leaders of opposition, Congress President K Meghachandra, which has criticized the exclusion of opposition members and voices demands for more inclusive dialogue. Meanwhile, in the state, security operations continued, and Indian Army recovered from a joint operation with Assam Rifles and Manipur Police a large cache of arms and ammunition, which underlines the present conflict.

This meeting is the most significant towards de-escalating violence and peacebuilding in Manipur.
