Manipur Bolsters Security with BSF and CRPF Amidst Jail Overcrowding, Ethnic Clashes Displace Thousands

In the troubled region of Manipur, several hundred additional security forces have been deployed over the past three days. Approximately 400 extra personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been dispatched to Manipur due to concerns about overcrowding in the state’s regular jails.

These additional personnel were transported to Manipur via C 130J and A 321 aircraft, as confirmed by an official source. The state government initiated the establishment of a temporary prison at the BSF’s subsidiary training centre in Churachandpur, following the declaration of the premises as a temporary prison under the Prisoner’s Act of 1984.

Weapon Return Deadline

The decision to create a new prison facility stems from Manipur’s Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh’s call for individuals to return stolen weapons within a 15-day window. After this period, both central and state security forces would launch an operation to recover these arms. Reportedly, out of the 5,668 weapons and nearly 600,000 rounds of ammunition looted from government armouries in May and June, only 1,329 weapons and around 14,000 rounds of ammunition have been retrieved so far. The government has expressed willingness to show leniency to those who surrender the weapons within the specified timeframe.
