The police have one week to solve the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, according to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She threatened to turn the probe over to the CBI if the police are unable to proceed. Banerjee set the deadline in the face of mounting political pressure from the BJP, even as she praised law enforcement as “the best in the world.”
Rape Murder Case –
In the state-run hospital’s seminar hall on Friday morning, the body of a second-year student studying chest medicine was discovered. The initial examination revealed blood from the eyes, mouth, private regions, left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger, and lips. The body displayed marks of injuries. The previous evening, the student had been on duty. In relation to the case, Sanjoy Roy, a volunteer for the community who frequently visited the hospital, was taken into custody. Doctors and political opposition have staged widespread rallies in response to the event.
The Chief Minister stated last week that if the striking medical professionals want the CBI—which is part of the central government led by the BJP—to take up the matter, she has no problem with it. She said, “… if agitating students want a probe by another agency, we are not against it.”

She further said – I told the Kolkata Police Commissioner that the situation was unfortunate and that quick action was required, including setting up a fast-track court, when I first learnt about it. Even with the presence of nurses and security, I still don’t understand how this scenario transpired.
