Mamata Banerjee, currently serving as the chief minister of West Bengal is attracting criticism for the comments she made during a rally held at the foundation day of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP). The rally has triggered a political battle, for and against her; after a 31-year-old woman trainee doctor was raped and murdered in Kolkata she has been severely criticised by leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other leaders from the North Eastern states.
In her speech, Mamata Banerjee has blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP of creating trouble in Bengal and that the incident was politically motivated. She said that if Bengal is set on-fire, other states would also burn including Assam, Northeast, U.P., Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi; essentially, all the states which threaten to bring down the Prime Minister’s chair. This comment has been given a gross perception as a threat not only to the BJP but also to the northeastern states and this has enraged the political leaders and the citizens across the country.

Sukanta Majumdar who is the West Bengal BJP state president and Union minister also criticised the comment made by Banerjee as ‘unprecedented and threatening’. In the letter written to Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, Majumdar pointed out that Banerjee crossed the line as a chief minister of the state by threatening people’s representative saying that she is directly threatening people of Bengal by insulting the PM. He said that such a rhetoric was unbecoming of her and was a threat to the democracy of the nation and the state and doubted her capability to be the Chief Minister.
BJP’s criticism was not limited to West Bengal and many even included other states; Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh aren’t an exception. Sarma while taking to twitter directly warned Banerjee of not fuelling violence and hatred through political agendas. He urged her to maintain the dignity expected of a senior political leader and refrain from threatening other states. Biren Singh echoed these sentiments, calling for a public apology from Banerjee to the northeastern states and the nation.

As protests continued to escalate, with a 12-hour Bangla Bandh called by the BJP across West Bengal, the situation on the ground grew increasingly tense. Clashes between protesters and security forces erupted in Kolkata, where police resorted to using tear gas, water cannons, and lathi-charges to disperse the crowds. The BJP’s bandh, coinciding with Banerjee’s rally, highlighted the growing frustration within the medical community and the public’s demand for justice and improved safety measures in the wake of the horrific crime.
The controversy surrounding Mamata Banerjee’s statements has further deepened the political divide in West Bengal and across India, with calls for accountability and justice growing louder.
