On Saturday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the area outside Swasthya Bhawan, where junior doctors were protesting. The doctors were upset over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Mamata Banerjee asked them to stop protesting and return to work.

Banerjee told the doctors, I  have been very worried while you protest in the rain. I promise to look into your demands and take action if someone is found guilty She came to meet them as their Didi(elder sister) and not just as the Chief Minister.

Banerjee also shared that she understands their protest because she was once a student leader herself. She promised that she would ensure they get justice and assured them that no action would be taken against them if they resumed work. She emphasized that their senior doctors cannot work without their help and urged them to return to their duties.

Despite Banerjee’s appeal, the protesting doctors refused to compromise. They stated that they would not end their protest until their demands are met. The protest, which started on August 9, has been ongoing for five days.

The doctors are demanding justice for their colleague who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College. They are also asking for the suspension of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, Health Secretary NS Nigam, the Director of Health Services, and the Director of Medical Education. They believe these officials failed in their duties related to the incident. Additionally, the doctors want better safety and security measures for all women health professionals in the state.

The protest has continued despite heavy rain and the Supreme Court’s deadline for the doctors to return to work, which passed on September 10. The doctors are firm in their stance, insisting on the need for proper discussions and actions before they will go back to their jobs.
