Tragic Playground Incident in Malleswaram: 11-Year-Old Boy Dies After Gate Collapse, Raising Questions About BBMP’s Maintenance and Safety Measures
It was a sad day in a BBMP playground in Malleswaram when an 11-year-old boy died after a gate fell on him. The event happened on Sunday around 4 in the evening when Niranjan, a fifth-grade student at BBMP School, attempted to open the gate to get into the playfield. Those who were present were able to narrate that Niranjan came on a bicycle and was talking to the gate when it fell on him and injured his head seriously.
When Niranjan came, according to the witness, Virupakshappa, who was at the scene, said that they were playing cricket. He reached his hand and touched the gate; the gate then collapsed on him. immediately we went for the gate and rushed him to the hospital.” Unfortunately though they tried their best, Niranjan died due to the severity of his injuries. The local residents have therefore expressed concerns on the state of the gate saying that the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has not been keen enough in maintaining or overseeing the gate.

After the above said incident Malleswaram police have started investigating the case. BBMP executive engineer N. Venkatesh said the construction of the gate was done two years ago and the maintenance was commissioned in 2022 and there were no officials when the accident occurred. The police have filed a case of negligence against the BBMP officials but there is need for a detailed probe. The minister of energy and mines Dinesh Gundu Rao said he was saddened by the incident and promised to launch a thorough investigation so as to determine the causes of this catastrophe and get to the bottom of it.
