Hours before the announcement of Maharashtra Assembly elections, seven members from the ruling Mahayuti alliance were sworn into the state’s legislative council. The new appointees include three representatives from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), two from Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena, and two from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) faction led by Ajit Pawar. Among the BJP members are Chitra Wagh, the head of the party’s women’s wing, Vikrant Patil, BJP general secretary, and Babusing Maharaj Rathod, a religious leader from the Banjara community. Shinde’s Sena faction is represented by former MLC Manisha Kayande and ex-MP Hemant Patil. The NCP faction includes Pankaj Bhujbal, son of state minister Chhagan Bhujbal, and Idris Naikwadi, former Mayor of Sangli.
Governor CP Radhakrishnan approved the nominations, which were submitted by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s office following a cabinet meeting on Monday. This comes after a prolonged controversy surrounding the Governor’s quota seats, which have been vacant since June 2020. The nominations made by the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi government were delayed by the former Governor, BS Koshyari, causing frustration in the High Court.
Traditionally, these seats are reserved for individuals from various fields such as literature, art, and social services, but political parties often fill them with their own members. The timing of the appointments has raised eyebrows, as they occurred just before the election code of conduct came into effect.
The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction has challenged these nominations in the Bombay High Court, accusing the government of bypassing due process.
