This has been one of the incidents of Mahakumbh 2025 where an officer of the police force was caught on camera contaminating food for devotees. Station House Officer (SHO) of Soraon, Brijesh Kumar Tiwari, was caught on camera mixing ash into the food being prepared for the Bhandara, which is a community feast to be served to the millions of pilgrims attending the event.
The video was instantly viral, creating public outcry. As soon as the incident occurred, the authorities suspended Tiwari. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) confirmed that departmental proceedings are underway.
The political fallout is huge, and figures like Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav have condemned the act and urged people to take note of the situation. Many have termed this as an attempt to deliberately mar the efforts of volunteers working round the clock for Mahakumbh, in order to distribute food and water to people in need. It has further heightened concerns regarding food safety and calls for better checks on security personnel who are associated with such sacrosanct events.

Given the fact that Mahakumbh is the largest religious gathering in the world, its reliance on community kitchens for the care of all pilgrims makes this incident more heinous in public eyes.
