Agra Teen Chooses Spiritual Path at Maha Kumbh, Becomes ‘Sadhvi’ with Parents’ Support
In a life-altering decision, a 13-year-old girl from Agra, who once aspired to become an IAS officer, has chosen a path of spiritual renunciation. The transformation took place during the Maha Kumbh camp in Prayagraj, where the teenager, Rakhi, decided to embrace a life of devotion and become a ‘sadhvi.’ Her parents, perceiving this as divine intervention, supported her decision wholeheartedly and performed rituals to formalize her renunciation.
According to Reema Singh, the mother of the young girl, this change in aspiration began when they participated in religious activities led by Mahant Kaushal Giri Maharaj of the Juna Akhara. “For the past three years, Maharaj Ji has visited our village for Bhagwat Katha sessions. During one such session, Rakhi took her guru diksha and expressed her desire to renounce worldly life,” Reema explained.
In December, the family, which includes Rakhi’s father Sandeep Singh and younger sister Nikki, joined the Juna Akhara camp at the Maha Kumbh. Sandeep, a confectionery businessman, and Reema had rented a house in Agra to provide education for their daughters. However, their plans took an unexpected turn when Rakhi decided to follow a spiritual path.

Rakhi always wanted to be an IAS officer, but during Maha Kumbh, she experienced a deep disconnection from the world and worldly ambitions. So when she told us that she wanted to be a sadhvi, we accepted it as God’s will and raised no objections,” said Reema.
Mahant Kaushal Giri Maharaj confirmed that it was a willful decision from the family’s side. “The family has been closely associated with us for some time. At their request, Rakhi has been accepted into the ashram. She will now be known as Gauri Giri,” he said.
The rituals, marking her formal induction into the spiritual fold, include her “pind daan” – a renunciation ceremony indicating that she is setting aside her worldly life – on January 19. The rites will make her fully part of the Guru’s spiritual family.

While relatives and acquaintances have questioned the family’s decision, Reema stands firm in her belief. “As a mother, I will always worry about her well-being. But we believe this is her calling and God’s wish,” she said.
This exceptional journey gives prominence to profound influences of belief and devotion. To Gauri Giri, the then-young Rakhi, it was not an experience of worship and spiritual fulfillment at the Maha Kumbh but just a starting step to a holistic spiritual life into one of service for life.
