Lucknow Police Encounter: Rape and Murder Accused Shot Dead, Brother Arrested in Swift Action
The Lucknow police have gunned down a man alleged to have attempted to rape and subsequently kill a woman in another dramatic twist. The killing happened within the Malihabad precinct of the city where the accused, Ajay Dwivedi, and his brother Dinesh were said to have committed the act of murder. While earlier in the day, Dinesh had been arrested, Ajay had been on the run until he was confronted by the police in the evening.
The Crime Unfolds
The police say that the events leading to the murder occurred on March 18 when the woman, having arrived in Lucknow from Varanasi, was on her way to meet her brother in Chinhat. She had told her brother she was on her way to him but never got there. Investigation revealed she was in a three-wheeler with the two accused, who misled her into thinking they were heading towards Malihabad rather than her intended destination.
On reaching a lonely mango orchard, they began to try and force themselves on her. When she resisted, they strangled her and dumped her body, fleeing the scene. The brother raised an alarm when, unable to contact her after her phone lay switched off, he immediately dialed the emergency police helpline UP 112.

Swift Police Action
Within hours, multiple police teams and electronic surveillance led to the swift apprehension of Dinesh early on Friday in the Dubagga area. Under police interrogation, he confessed and gave vital information on the whereabouts of his brother.
In the evening hours, police located Ajay at Mahmood Nagar. However, once noticing police, Ajay attempted escape and opened fire on the officers, necessitating that police respond in kind and injure him. Thereafter, he was transported to a local hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced dead.

Police Response and Investigation
The sequence of events was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Lucknow West) Vishwajit Shrivastava, who stated that Ajay had been absconding since the commission of the crime. Because of the brutality of the offence, the police had announced a reward of rupees one hundred thousand for information leading to the arrest. With Ajay’s death and Dinesh’s apprehension, further legal proceedings are now to be undertaken to ensure justice for the woman and her family.
This provided a further avenue to raise the need for women’s safety in cities, the need to keep up vigilance while traveling during odd hours. While the police response has been commendable, the irrevocable loss of an innocent life stands to remind us of the society’s lurking dangers. Meanwhile, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to ensure that such incidents are a thing of the past.
