Israel Expands Military Operations in Southern Lebanon as Hezbollah and Iranian Proxies Target Israeli Cities with Missile Strikes Amid Rising Tensions
The Israeli military said it intends to broaden its ground campaign further into southern Lebanon, which has helped escalate the latest spate of fighting in a variety of ways. Israel Defense Forces made this declaration on the one-year anniversary of the October 7 assault by Hamas, which left scores of civilians and soldiers dead and marked a turning point in this century’s deadliest conflict for the country. The IDF has now warned the southern residents of the Awali River that henceforth they are not allowed to visit beaches or head for the sea so as to keep its citizens save, but it did not mention the details of the planned operation.

These developments have prompted Iranian proxy forces to launch missile attacks on cities in Israel. The Iranian-backed Hezbollah claimed responsibility for strikes on an Israeli military base close to the northern port city of Haifa and reportedly carried out additional attacks there and in other areas of the north. By Monday evening, Israel had counted some 135 incoming projectiles, reported to have caused ten injuries in the city of Haifa and other injuries to others living further south.

To this end, Israel’s military has carried out heavy airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, escalating the military conflict. Border clashes killed two Israeli soldiers, and the health ministry in Lebanon confirmed ten dead firefighters at the hands of an Israeli airstrike on Bint Jbeil. In a few hours, the IDF intensified its operations against 120 sites in southern Lebanon. It is reportedly focusing on targeting the missile capabilities and the intelligence activities of Hezbollah. This is one of the most volatile and complex region-based conflicts.
