In a shocking incident on Thursday, terrorists in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district attacked and left injured laborer from Uttar Pradesh. Sources identified the victim as Shubam Kumar from Bijnore and said that he had been left with a gunshot wound on his arm when terrorists opened fire at him in Batagund village falling under Tral. Kumar had been taken to a nearby hospital in time and is reportedly stable at present.

This is the third attack on non-local laborers in Kashmir over the last week. Just the other day, six non-local laborers and a local doctor were murdered in a dastardly terrorist attack on an under-construction site in Ganderbal district. The dead belonged to APCO Infratech, a company engaged in construction work on the Z-Morh tunnel along the Srinagar-Sonamarg highway.
The incident had reportedly happened at about 7:25 p.m. when employees had congregated in the workers’ camp to have dinner. Two terrorists, with an American M4 carbine and an AK-47, were caught on CCTV footage. They spent seven minutes on the site, unleashing vengeance that shocked the nation.

The Ganderbal attack, which was on a strategic Srinagar-Leh national highway and in the shadow of barren mountains, was the deadliest civilian attack since June in Jammu and Kashmir. Nine pilgrims were killed early in June after their bus came under terrorists’ fire and plunged into a valley on June 9 in Reasi.
Another laborer, Ashok Kumar Chavan of Bihar, was killed earlier by terrorists in Shopian district on October 18. Chavan’s body was recovered with four bullet wounds in the Wachi area of Zainpora. His was the first targeted killing in Kashmir since the civilian government, led by Omar Abdullah, resumed power in Jammu and Kashmir on October 16.
These incidents go to further expose the vulnerability of non-local workers in the region, who have become frequent targets of terror attacks. Despite increased security measures, the spate of violence continues to instill fear and insecurity among non-local populations working in Kashmir-even complicating efforts that may be necessary to stabilize the region.
