Kolkata Junior Doctors Continue Protests Amid Heavy Rain, Condemn BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari for Politicizing RG Kar Kolkata Rape-Murder Case
The junior doctors continue to strike in Kolkata with full force despite the current rains in the area. They still want the perpetrators of the heinous crime of allegedly raping and killing a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 to be brought to book. The protest which is in its fourth night now being held outside Swasthya Bhawan has received a lot of attention.

On Friday the doctors condemned BJP Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari for saying that people who chanted ‘Go Back’ at BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul were not junior doctors. This the protesters vehemently dismissed by saying to whoever is listening: “Nobody shall be allowed to politicize our struggle,” The protesters stressed that they only want justice and improvement in the state’s health care system without involving politics.

The protesting doctors have also penned a letter to the Indian president Droupadi Murmu and the prime minister, Narendra Modi concerning the current strife. They have called for the dismissal of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, better protection for the healthcare sector personnel and the arrest of the culprits. They are also demanding student union elections in medical colleges as well as demanding the formation of resident doctors association.

As much as the Supreme Court is putting pressure to the doctors asking them to go back to work, the junior doctors have not relented and will continue with the strike as they wait for their demands to meet. Due to the constant protest, the Kolkata Police presence has installed CCTV cameras at the protest location to secure and observe the area.
