The rally, which began at 4pm and ended around midnight, wove through prominent spots in the city like Science City, Ruby Crossing and SSKM Hospital. Marchers carried burning torches and India’s national flag as they raised slogans to remember the victim, who has been dubbed “Abhaya” (the fearless one). A retired schoolteacher told media why she had taken part in the rally: “Though I am unwell, I had to come out. The victim could have been my granddaughter. This rally follows the decision last week by junior doctors in West Bengal to end their 11-day strike and resume emergency services while demanding better safety conditions in state government hospitals. The West Bengal government has been given a seven-day deadline to meet a five-point demand by the doctors with the Supreme Court slated to hear the case soon.
The torch rally echoed the rising public demand for immediate justice and overhaul as city continued to reel under shock, grief and anger following the tragedy.
