For almost a month, junior doctors in Kolkata have been engaging in protests and have not returned to work until their demands have been fulfilled.

The doctors presented chief minister Mamata Banerjee with five demands to end their demonstrations and go back to work, in response to calls from the government and the judiciary to restart work. Junior doctors  who were on strike on Friday agreed to end it after West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant gave assurances about safety and security measures.

Doctors have declared that they will remain on strike until they see substantial movement on all fronts, even though they were told that no negative action would be taken against them and that the government will act upon their requests.

Here are the Demands

The government decided to provide ₹100 crore for hospital infrastructure development and the reconstruction of patient welfare committees, as per the meeting minutes. Additionally, the police commissioner, junior medical representatives, and the chief secretary would form a special task team.

Additionally, the government would establish a system for hospitals and medical colleges to file grievances. The doctors  demanded that Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal be removed on the grounds that he had mismanaged the case and tampered with the evidence. Additionally, they demanded the dismissal of DC (North) Abhishek Gupta. Additionally, they demanded the resignation of the state’s directors of medical education (DME) and health services (DHS).

In compliance with directives from the Supreme Court, the government is endeavoring to implement modern safety measures including security cameras in hospitals and more police presence in hospitals.
