Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case Sparks Controversy: TMC and BJP Clash Over Allegations of Police Cover-Up, Bribery, and Family Coercion
The recent incident of a postgraduate medical student being raped and murdered in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata has led to a war of words between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While frustration from the public continues to rise, the family member of the victim has accused Kolkata police of improper handling of the case as the authorities hurried to cremate the body. The victim’s father has said that a senior officer wanted to pay him to make sure that the case does not go further, which have been a major concern of public.
Though, TMC spokesperson Shashi Panja has recently called upon the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has taken over the case last month, to carry out their probes promptly in this regards. Although panja showed concern for the family’s loss, he stated that the case required an independent investigation.

The events worsened when there was a video of the victim’s father dismissing bribery charges and discouraging people from sharing falsehood. This video was released by the TMC to address the bribery allegations leveled against the later. Nonetheless, TMC has been accused of twisting the narrative and this has been criticized by the BJP. BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya tweeted a video which indicated that the family of the victim was pressurised by the police to give statements that diluted the bribery allegations.

The victim’s family has in turn stated that the video was therefore recorded under force and coercion despite the police behaving as if they were trying to conceal the case as well as protect the elites. The family becomes more frustrated as well as the allegations, and the crisis in identifying the problem increases with one party using this incident to campaign against the other, even when people demand justice.
