Kerala Police File First FIR Against Filmmaker Ranjith Following Sexual Misconduct Allegations by Actress Sreelekha Mitra, Triggering Wider Controversy in Mollywood
The Kerala Police have lodged their first FIR against the Director Ranjith after a series of Me Too campaigns that disturbed the Malayalam film industry, popularly known as Mollywood. The FIR was lodged in this regard after Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra lodged the complaint against Ranjith with the Kochi city police commissioner alleging indecent behaviour.

Sreelekha in the complaint by email stated that Ranjith had sexually assaulted her with sexual intent at a meeting in 2009 in which he offered her a role in his movie Paleri Manikyam. S Syamsundar, the Police commissioner of Kochi said that a case had been lodged under IPC section number 354 against Ranjith for assault or criminal force used to outrage the modesty of a woman.
Sreelekha’s allegations have come in the backdrop of many other diva’s accusing several other famous male faces of Mollywood for sexual misconducts. She narrated that one day when they were discussing a script of a movie, Ranjith started making advance sexually to her in a round about way that made her feel uncomfortable. Loathsome by his conduct she declined the project and came back to kolkata. She also pointed out that there are other women actors who have gone through the same experience but did not come forward because of Ranjith’s dominance in the industry.

In response, Ranjith denied the ever having committed the allegations mentioning that he was the victim in this case. After these serious allegations against him he had to step down from the seat of chairman of Kerala Chalachitra Academy due to the fear that such a scandal could harm the image of the Left government in Kerala.

Its impact is still continuing as more and more actresses accused other actors basing the information collected by the Justice K Hema Committee over the harassment in the Malayalam film industry that pressurised the Kerala government for action. However, recently a seven- member Special Investigation Team SIT has been constituted in order to probe into those charges as the opposition parties accused the government of shielding the accused.
