The prime minister, Narendra Modi, led the ruling BJP’s manifesto promises for a uniform civil code and “one nation, one election” on Thursday. He made a clear case for a “secular” civil code in place of the current framework, which is “communal” and encourages “discrimination,” as well as for simultaneous polls.

Yunus dials PM Modi, assures safety, security of Hindus, other minorities:

The interim government of Bangladesh’s main adviser, Muhammad Yunus, gave Prime Minister Modi a call on Friday to reassure him that the safety of Hindus and all other minorities would be a top priority for the incoming Dhaka government. During the chat, Modi also emphasized the significance of guaranteeing the “protection, safety and security” of Hindus and other minorities while pledging India’s support for a “democratic, stable, peaceful and progressive” Bangladesh under Yunus.

Reports of attacks on minorities have been overstated, the Nobel laureate informed the Prime Minister, adding that “he is inviting Indian journalists to visit Bangladesh and report from the ground on issues of protection of the minorities”. According to Yunus, his government is dedicated to guaranteeing every person of the nation’s human rights and bringing the governmental apparatus up to date.

In Kolkata rape-murder; Hospital ex-principal questioned by CBI; IMA announces 24 hour withdrawal of services

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has declared that, in protest of the rape and killing of a woman doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, non-emergency medical services will be discontinued nationally for a full day on August 17 beginning at 6 am.

In addition, the IMA is calling for a prompt and comprehensive investigation into the incident as well as the identification and sentencing of those responsible for the hospital vandalism on August 15.

On Saturday, August 17, 2014, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, made his second appearance in front of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to be questioned on the rape and murder of a physician.

The agency brought the former hospital principal for interrogation on Friday, August 16, 2014, and it went on until three in the morning on Saturday, August 17, 2014.

According to an officer, Mr. Ghosh was asked to wait in a room at the CBI’s city office at the CGO Complex until 9.30 p.m., at which point the questioning began.

Cabinet approves airport, metro projects worth 34000 crore:

The government approved two private airports and three metro rail projects totaling Rs 33,718 crore in Karnataka and Maharashtra, which are scheduled to go to polls this Friday. This brings the total amount of approvals granted in the previous nine weeks to almost Rs 2 lakh crore.

As PM Narendra Modi had stated that the new government will make significant choices “within a short timeframe, since June, in the initial few Cabinet meetings, infrastructure projects costing around Rs 2 lakh crore have been approved,” I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made this statement. Additionally, minor projects that don’t need Cabinet clearance have also been approved. He continued by saying that there are currently metro rail systems in operation in 21 cities, and that in the next years, the three new projects will make India’s network the second largest in the world.

For the past four years, the Modi government has pushed infrastructure spending in the hopes of generating demand for raw materials like steel and cement as well as jobs.

By December 2029, the Bangalore Metro Rail phase-3 would have two approved corridors totaling 44.6 km and an anticipated investment of Rs 15,611 crore, bringing the network’s overall length to over 220 km. With this, India’s IT hub would have access to a full ring of metro rail, which is expected to increase daily ridership from the current level of 7.7 lakh to 26 lakh, a more than three-fold increase.

J&K election to be held in 3 phases from Sep 18, CEC says ballot is best answer to bullet; Haryana will vote on Oct 1:

 Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar revealed the schedule for the three phases of the assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir during a news conference on Friday. The elections will be held on October 4. The dates of the J&K elections are September 18, 25, and October 1. Kumar stated that the people of J&K “chosen ballots over bullets” in a striking critique of the region’s acceptance of elections. With 58.46 percent of the vote cast in the parliamentary elections that took place in April and May of this year, J&K saw its greatest voter turnout in 35 years.
