Jaishankar Confident India-US Ties Will Strengthen, No Matter the US Election Outcome
Jaishankar affirms India-US ties will grow stronger regardless of the US election result, highlighting steady progress under the last five presidencies.
India-US Relations Will Continue to Strengthen Regardless of US Election Results, Affirms External Affairs Minister Jaishankar
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said that he was optimistic about the growth of India-US relations. He said that bilateral ties between the two nations would continue to grow in the future, regardless of who wins the US presidential election.
While speaking at a joint press conference with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong in Canberra, Jaishankar pointed out that India and the United States have always made consistent progress over the last five presidential administrations.
He said India’s relations with the US have not only been steady but have also been upgraded under different governments-from the previous President Donald Trump. Jaishankar said, “We have seen steady progress in our relationship with the US over the last five presidencies, including an earlier Trump presidency. So, when we look at the American election, we are very confident that whatever the verdict, our relationship with the United States will only grow.”
Jaishankar explained the Quad, a strategic partnership between the US, India, Japan, and Australia by saying that it remains quite robust and will continue playing a very important role for the stability of the region in the Indo-Pacific region. He recalled that the Quad was reinvigorated in 2017 under the Trump administration, and he continued that one of the first in-person Quad meetings took place during the pandemic in 2020, demonstrating that the member nations were keen on the objectives of the Quad.
It remains to be seen just how much of a role these might play in the U.S. election, to which we are coming; ballots are being counted in competitive states including Georgia, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, but Jaishankar’s remarks can only reflect India’s general trust in the long-term staying power of its tie to America.
If Donald Trump wins this November in the United States as the President of that country, or it happens that Kamala Harris will emerge as the Democratic Vice President of America, then well into the next presidential term of either one, their bonds with India will indeed grow stronger in the domains of democracy, security, and economic cooperation.
But even before all this, yet another domain on which Prime Minister Modi and President-elect Joe Biden should focus, given public statements made by Jaishankar, would be the Quad; that body must continue to constitute the central forum for expressing the free and open nature of the Indo-Pacific, given challenges emanating from an expanded China.
