Congress and BJP Intensify Election Campaigns and Strategic Meetings as J-K Assembly Gears Up for Historic Assembly Polls
There has been a growing tension and polarisation in the politics of Jammu and Kashmir with assembly polls lined up for the first time in decades in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1. Although AAP is currently holding the reins at the Centre, it is Congress and BJP that are modernising themselves in the race to capture the region. Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi have already arrived in Jammu and Kashmir for a two days visit. They were accorded a warm welcome, party supporters throng to the airport and caused some security breaches.

The Congress duo is likely to hold a series of important meetings with party leaders and workers of the Kashmir valley on Thursday as well. Such discussions will probably serve as the main leverage when the party starts preparing to fight the upcoming elections. Further, negotiations with the National Conference (NC) leadership will be expected along with the chance of pre-poll adjustment possibly.

In the BJP unit, Ram Madhav, a senior leader has been already stationed in Srinagar and he is among the key leaders who are holding discussions with security agencies for the protection of BJP leaders and candidates. Some of the famous faces include Ram Madhav, the man responsible for the formation of BJP-PDP coalition after the 2014 state assembly polls. But the BJP has declared that it will not be fielding candidates in all the constituencies in the Kashmir valley as the election dates near. This is particularly true in the politically destabilized areas where the two parties will step up their campaign in the coming weeks.
