Indian Railways Announces Operation of 992 Special Trains for Kumbh Mela 2024 in Prayagraj, Enhancing Infrastructure and Amenities for Millions of Devotees
Indian Railways declared that it would run a total of 992 special trains in order to accommodate the huge number of pilgrims during Kumbh Mela 2024. This gigantic religious congregation is going to take place in the city of Prayagraj in January, and it has been estimated that between 30-50 crore devotees are expected to visit. The Railway Ministry has added 42% more special trains than in the 2019 Mela, and has also infused Rs 933 crore into infrastructure improvements, including upgrading passenger amenities as well as doubling railway tracks in the Prayagraj Division, to host the mammoth turnout.

Besides smooth flow of traffic, the work on over-bridges on road and doubling of rail tracks is being accelerated. The ministry is investing Rs 440 crore on over-bridges alone while another Rs 495 crore for additional facilities such as CCTV cameras, improved waiting areas, and medical services at stations. However, important rail lines such as Varanasi-Jhusi are already completed so that connectivity can be better.

They have been reviewing the preparations regularly, both through video conferences and in-person meetings, to coordinate among railway divisions including Prayagraj and Varanasi. With these stringent measures, Indian Railways is all set to face the huge rush of passengers with safety and comfort without compromising on it for all of the devotees who would be participating in Kumbh Mela 2024.
