Govt data shows 2.25 lakh people renounce Indian citizenship, highest in last 12 years
According to the figures provided by External Affairs Minister, Dr S Jaishankar, a total of 2,25,620 Indians (AS84.pdf (pqars.nic.in) )renounced their citizenship in 2022. This is the highest ever number in the past twelve years. Estimates also say that since 2011 a total of 1.66 million people have given up their citizenship.
The reply was given by the External Affairs Minister in the Rajya Sabha as a response to a question by Narain Dass Gupta of AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) who wanted to know the number of Indians who had given up their citizenship and the list of the countries whose citizenship they had adopted.

Here are the figures and details as provided by the minister-
- From 2011 to 2019 the range of Indians renouncing their citizenship was between 120,000 and 144,000.
- In 2020 a drop was seen in these numbers due to the Covid-19 pandemic which had made movement a little difficult. However, the number in 2020 came to be 85,256.
- In 2021 the numbers saw a huge rise as there were 1,63,370 Indians who gave up their citizenship to be citizens of other countries.
- On an average the number of citizens leaving the country has increased gradually.
- 135 countries were in the list whose citizenship was acquired after they gave up their Indian citizenship.
- No specific details about which country saw how many enrollments was mentioned.
- Range of countries like Bangladesh, UK, USA, Canada, Iran, Iraq, Mexico among others were featured on this list.
Another question by AAP MP Shri Narain Dass Gupta (AU868.pdf (pqars.nic.in)) had asked about “the number of businessmen and professionals who have settled abroad, especially in UAE, Singapore and UK, during the last four years.”
In reply to this, V Muraleedharan, Union Minister of State for External Affairs & Parliamentary Affairs, said- “There are no restrictions on Indian nationals regarding travelling to foreign countries for tourism or employment. Some of them settle down in their country of employment and acquire foreign nationality for personal reasons. Specific data related to number of businessmen and professionals who have settled abroad during last 4 years is not available.”
