India has finalized a long-discussed defense agreement with the United States to acquire 31 MQ-9B Predator drones. The deal, signed on Tuesday, marks a significant boost to India’s defense capabilities, especially in surveillance and combat operations. The purchase includes 15 Sea Guardian drones for the Indian Navy and 16 Sky Guardian drones—eight each for the Indian Army and Air Force.

The Predator drones, manufactured by US defense firm General Atomics, are known for their high-altitude, long-endurance capabilities. They are capable of staying airborne for over 35 hours and carrying heavy weaponry, including four Hellfire missiles. These drones will strengthen India’s ability to monitor its borders, particularly the tense frontier with China. The drones can also be equipped with bombs, adding to their versatility in combat situations.
The deal, valued at ₹32,000 crore, also includes provisions for a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility to be set up in India. This facility is expected to support the drones’ long-term use and ensure that Indian defense forces can maintain them locally, reducing dependence on external support.
The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) had approved the acquisition last week. The contract signing saw the presence of senior Indian and American officials, including those from India’s Joint Secretary and Acquisition Management for naval systems. The deal is part of broader defense cooperation between India and the US, which has grown in recent years as India seeks to modernize its military hardware.
Predator drones have proven their effectiveness in military operations worldwide. The MQ-9 variant was notably used in the operation that killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in Kabul in 2022. India hopes to use these advanced drones to enhance its defense readiness along its borders and improve surveillance over its maritime territories.
