Tejashwi Yadav Clarifies INDIA Bloc’s Lok Sabha Focus Amid Congress-AAP Rift in Delhi Polls; BJP Criticizes Opposition Unity
Amid rising tensions within the INDIA bloc, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav clarified on Wednesday that the coalition was mainly formed for the Lok Sabha elections. His remarks came after the fallout between Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the context of the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls.
“It was already decided that the INDIA Alliance was meant for Lok Sabha polls only,” Tejashwi said when asked about the discord between Congress and AAP, who have chosen to contest the Delhi elections independently. His comments highlight the strategic limitations of the bloc, initially formed to challenge the BJP’s dominance at the national level.
This discord in the alliance surfaces prominently during Parliament’s Winter Session and now through the Delhi polls. RJD chief Lalu Yadav recently fired another round of controversy by upholding West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s right to lead opposition alliance, thereby indirectly questioning the leadership role assumed by Congress.

BJP Hits Back at Differences in INDIA Bloc
Reacting to the schism, BJP spokesperson Arvind Singh termed the Opposition leaders as “international scamsters”, and alleged that the coming together of opposition leaders was nothing but a facade to oppose Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “People decorated with many charges had come together in elections against an honest man,” Singh said while elongating the BJP’s narrative of portraying opposition unity as opportunist and unstable .
INDIA Bloc’s Insides Battles
The INDIA bloc has been under consistent pressure since the conclusion of the Lok Sabha polls in June last year. As a campaigner, even the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had foreseen the demise of the bloc after the release of the results for the 2024 general election. Subsequent events seem to support his claim.
During the Winter Session, the two pillars of opposition in the Parliament, Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Samajwadi Party (SP), shifted allegiance away from Congress. TMC leader Mamata Banerjee, followed by several regional parties, has been portraited as an alternative leader to the bloc at the center, bypassing Congress during crucial discussion.
This further widened the cracks in the Delhi Assembly elections. Although there was an initial hint of collaboration, AAP and Congress individually announced their campaigns, which translates into unresolved tensions. In Haryana last year, BJP won a third consecutive term when efforts at alliance had failed.

Three-Way Fight: Delhi
The Delhi Assembly election, scheduled on February 5, will mark a litmus test for cohesion within the bloc INDIA. Vote counting for the elections, which are in a triangular competition between Aam Aadmi Party, Congress, and BJP, has been scheduled on February 8.
Adding to the problems of Congress, Akhilesh Yadav’s SP and Mamata Banerjee’s TMC have supported AAP. The fissures within the bloc raise questions about its viability in sustaining unity for the national elections.
With the elections now knocking at the door, the INDIA bloc will face a stern test of strategy and leadership with growing public and political scrutiny.
