Independence Day 2024: The Significance of Hoisting the National Flag at the Red Fort and Its Symbolic Legacy in India’s Freedom Celebration
India’s 78th Independence Day: India is eagerly planning for its 78th Independence Day on the 15th of August 2024, and the preparations state towards the event is absolutely unique. This day being the independence day is a reminder of the many struggles that were made by countless freedom fighter for India. The tricolour will fly high and will be displayed in houses, offices and in other establishments as a symbol of unity and sovereignty of the country. One of the chief rites practiced on this day is the fising of the Indian National Flag at the Red Fort in Delhi.

Flag Hoisting vs. Flag Unfurling: It is important to know that the public display of the national flag, and more specifically raising it, is an important part of Independence Day. It also necessary to stress the difference of the terms “flag hoisting” and “flag unfurling”, which are often referred to one to the other. On the Independence day the flag has to be raise up to mark the independence and it have to be done as on August 15th, 1947 the India got independence. The premise of the flag is to be hoisted to the peak of the flag mast as a result of triumph over colonialism in India.

Why the Red Fort?
1. Historical Significance: Lal Quila or the Red Fort was the residence which was used by Mughal emperors for approximately two hundred years. For many, it is a single place that represents history and culture of the entire India.
2. Symbol of Sovereignty: Red fort has always been symbol of sovereignty of India. The flags bear testimony to the fact that freedom is not easy to come by and to be symbolic of that liberty, the flag is hoisted here.
3. Ceremonial Importance: Some of the important cultural events and ceremonials are the ‘Independence Day’ which involves hoisting of the Indian flag by the solders at the Red fort and Prime minister’s speech and ‘Republic Day’ that comprises of cultural programs, military parade, etc. This tradition was started by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru on the occasion of the first independent ‘s Independence on August 15, 1947.
