Gujarat Faces Severe Flooding as Deep Depression Intensifies into Cyclone Asna: IMD Issues Alert for First Arabian Sea Cyclone Since 1964
At present, Gujarat is facing second severe cylone like situation due to deep depression over Saurashtra which has resulted in heavy rains and floods in many areas. Continued above normal monsoon conditions which have been especially in northwest India is expected to last up to September 2. It has been predicted that Meteorologists will turn the deep depression into Cyclone Asna by Friday for the first cyclone in the Arabian sea since 1964.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Saurashtra and Kutch regions will receive extremely heavy rainfall up to Friday and the rain will be reduce gradually on the later days. This rather paradoxical situation, in which a system deepens into a cyclone after being generated in the territory of the land, has a historical basis, but is rather rare. However, there were similar situations in the past where it even degenerated into a depression over Saurashtra which went on to turn into a cyclone in the Arabian Sea.
Apart from the cyclone, another low pressure area over the Central and north Bay of Bengal will bring very heavy rains in the Odisa Coast, Coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe within the next few days. The other areas likely to be affected include North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha and Telangana will receive heavy falls.
