At a gunfight in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, a terrorist was killed and a soldier was injured to the point of death. This occurs one day after fighting broke out in the Trumkhan neighborhood of Lolab, in the border region of Kupwara, between militants and the joint military forces. The Indian Army reports that the search is still going on in the area. “A Joint Search Operation was launched by #IndianArmy & @JmuKmrPolice on days leading upto 23 July 24 (sic) based on specific input regarding presence of terrorists in general area Kowut, Kupwara,” Chinar Cops of Indian Army wrote in a post on X. Terrorists launched randomly fired gunfire on July 24 after forces noticed suspicious activity and confronted them. one terrorist has been eliminated and a NCO is injured, in the fire fight.

Encounter in Battal sector
The soldier who had suffered wounded during the gunfight in Jammu’s Battal district earlier on Tuesday passed away. “All Ranks of White Knight Corps Salute the Supreme Sacrifice of Braveheart L/Nk Subhash Chander who laid down his life in the line of duty,” the White Knight Corps announced on X. In this time of sorrow, White Knight Corps extends its sincere condolences and stands behind the grieving family.”
The soldier sustained injuries during the firefight. In the Battal Sector of Jammu, troops successfully engaged militants who were trying to infiltrate by using effective firepower. The firefight took place on Monday and Tuesday nights in between.

Increase terror attacks in J-K
The last month has seen an increase in terror strikes in the Jammu region, which had relative tranquility between 2005 and 2021 after security forces eradicated decades-long militancy. Among the incidents was one on a pilgrimage bus that resulted in 40 injuries and nine fatalities.

In October 2021, terrorist activities from the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri reappeared. The security establishment linked some of the deadly strikes that spread to Reasi, Kathua, and Doda to Pakistani handlers trying to resurrect terrorism in the Jammu region. In terror-related attacks in the Jammu region since 2021, around 70 people have died, including 52 security personnel (mainly from the Army).
