What did External Affairs Minister Jaishankar say?

In a press conference EAM said, “Frankly, we are at a loss to understand, other than the requirements of vote-bank politics, why anybody would do this… I think there is a larger underlying issue about the space which is given to separatists, to extremists, to people who advocate violence. I think it is not good for relationships, and not good for Canada. If you look at their history, you would imagine that they learn from history and they would not like to repeat that history. It is not only one incident, however, egregious it may be.”

Cameron MacKay, Canada’s High Commissioner for India said in a tweet

I am appalled by reports of an event in Canada that celebrated the assassination of late Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. There is no place in Canada for hate or for the glorification of violence. I categorically condemn these activities.”

What was so problematic about the float?

Everything! The float not only celebrated the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards, but a poster in the background also said “Revenge of attack on Shri Darbar Sahib”.

On 31st October, 1984, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assasinated by her bodyguards at her residence. The assasination was carried out in the aftermath of Opeartion Blue Star where Indian military had entered the Golden Temple  in Amristar to flush out the separatists who were operating from there. The operation was cristicsed by many as it violated the sacredness of the temple.

What followed the assasination was one of the worst communal violence India had ever seen and resulted in the death of many Sikhs.

Congress General Secretary Randeep Surjewala also urged- “We urge the government to summon the Canadian High Commissioner and lodge a serious protest and say clearly to the Canadian government that anti-India activities are unacceptable and we will not tolerate those. And if you still permit them, then sanctions will follow.”

The Indian government has been very clear on its stance on Pro-Khalistani and extremist groups that operate outside India and will not tolerate actions that lead to the disruption of peace and intergrity of the nation.
