A bench consisting of Justices A S Bopanna and M M Sundresh has reaffirmed the 2018 ban and guidelines regarding the use of traditional firecrackers as a measure to combat pollution. The court dismissed two applications that had sought permission for the production and sale of firecrackers containing barium and joint firecrackers. The bench emphasized that they did not alter the 2018 directives and that relevant authorities must adhere to them.

In a recent development, the Supreme Court instructed the Delhi police not to issue temporary licenses for the sale of firecrackers in the capital city. Justices AS Bopanna and MM Sundresh expressed the need to evaluate the progress made over the years and whether further directives were necessary. They observed that previous court orders had addressed many aspects of the issue.

Green Firecrackers prohibition
The bench made it clear that a government-imposed ban implies a complete prohibition. They instructed Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, representing the Center, to ensure that the Delhi police refrained from granting any form of licenses, as it would contravene the court’s orders. This decision reinforces the court’s commitment to reducing air pollution and its adverse effects on public health.
