Tragic Building Collapse in Delhi’s Karol Bagh: Residents Feared Trapped as Emergency Services Rush to the Scene Following Recent Similar Incidents
On Wednesday, there was a sad incident in New Delhi’s Karol Bagh where a part of a house caved and this made people fear that some of the occupants of the house could have been trapped inside the debris. Firefighters arrived rather quickly, 5 fire brigades with fire fighting vehicles and equipment. The incident is not an isolated tragedy of the continual danger posed by structural failures that occurred just a few days prior to the current calamity when a wall crumbled at a dargah in Nabi Karim, central Delhi, and claimed one lives and injured two others.

As in the recent Karol Bagh incident, it may be noted that of the three people who were reported trapped at least two were later rescued. However there was a man who was rescued later from the rubbles who was however declared dead on arrival at the hospital. The building collapsed in Karol Bagh district is similar to last week’s tragedy in Meerut’s Zakir Nagar where a three storey house collapsed claiming ten people. District Magistrate Deepak Meena announced that financial aid is being arranged, including ₹4 lakh for each deceased from the natural calamity fund and ₹1.20 lakh for the damage to the house. Additional support will be provided for the loss of animals in the incident.

The opponent Samajwadi Party (SP) joined Congress party to condemn and demanded the government to provide adequate compensation to the families. The Congress has demanded sufficient fund requirement, free medical attendance to the affected and adequate rehabilitation policies for main accountable disaster response and relief.
