Delhi Bans All Firecrackers Until January 2025 to Combat Severe Winter Pollution

Delhi's extended firecracker ban aims to combat severe winter pollution, targeting all firecrackers to improve air quality and public health.

Delhi bans all firecrackers until January 2025 to combat severe winter pollution and improve air quality, despite previous challenges.

The Delhi government has decided to ban all firecrackers until January 1, 2025, to tackle the city’s severe winter air pollution. This ban includes all types of firecrackers, even those labeled as green or environmentally friendly. The decision was announced by State Environment Minister Gopal Rai, who explained that firecrackers contribute to the city’s pollution, which worsens every winter.

Rai mentioned that during winter, Delhi’s air quality deteriorates significantly due to a combination of factors, including emissions from firecrackers and farm fires. Farm fires in neighboring states like Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh create a thick smog that drifts into Delhi. When firecrackers are added to this, the air quality becomes extremely poor, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) often exceeding 400, which is considered severe

To address this problem, the government is implementing a complete ban on the production, storage, sale, and use of firecrackers. This includes a ban on online sales of firecrackers as well. A formal notification about the ban will be issued soon.

Although the Delhi government has imposed a similar ban every year since 2020, it has had limited success. A black market for firecrackers often emerges, and despite the ban, many people continue to buy and use them, especially around Diwali. This results in Delhi being enveloped in a dense haze for several days during the festival.

The ban aims to protect the public from the harmful effects of pollution, which significantly impacts health. By restricting firecracker use, the government hopes to improve air quality and reduce the city’s pollution levels during the critical winter months.
