Chandni Chowk Maintenance Resumes as Pending Dues Issue Gets Attention
Maintenance work on the iconic Chandni Chowk stretch between the Red Fort and Fatehpuri Mosque has resumed after a brief halt due to a payment dispute. A private firm contracted by the Public Works Department (PWD) temporarily suspended services, citing pending dues of ₹5.5 crore. The government has now intervened, assuring the firm that the dues will be cleared, and work will continue.
A Temporary Halt:
The private firm responsible for maintaining the Chandni Chowk area, which includes sweeping, cleaning, washing, and maintaining public toilets, had not received payments since April. In a letter dated October 13, the firm announced its intention to suspend services from October 16, seeking clarity on the closure or extension of its contract.

Positive Developments:
Following discussions with the PWD minister, Atishi, and the private firm, the contractor has resumed work. They have also been promised an extension of their contract for one more month once the pending dues are cleared.
The Bigger Picture:
While the immediate issue has been resolved, stakeholders like Sanjay Bhargava, head of the Chandni Chowk Sarv Vyapar Mandal, point out that the long-term problems need attention. These issues include encroachment and an excessive number of unregulated rickshaws on the redeveloped stretch.
Chandni Chowk Revamp:
In September 2021, Delhi’s chief minister inaugurated the revamped Chandni Chowk area, making it pedestrian-friendly and installing CCTV cameras for safety. The second phase of the redevelopment project aims to restore and beautify the historical buildings in the Chandni Chowk area.
