Arvind Kejriwal resigns as Delhi CM, AAP selects Atishi as new leader ahead of elections

Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, has decided to step down from his position. He announced this after a meeting with Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. The decision was confirmed during a meeting of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators. During the meeting, party leader Dilip Pandey suggested that Kejriwal choose the next Chief Minister. Kejriwal proposed Atishi’s name, and all the AAP MLAs agreed. Atishi was then elected as the leader of the legislature party.

Atishi is currently a minister in the Delhi government and manages important departments like Education and Public Works. She has played a key role in improving education in Delhi’s schools. Atishi, who represents the Kalkaji constituency, is 43 years old and a graduate of Oxford University. She became a minister after Manish Sisodia was arrested in connection with a corruption case related to Delhi’s liquor policy. Since then, she has been a strong voice for the party, speaking at events and in the media when Kejriwal and Sisodia were in jail.

In August, Kejriwal showed his trust in Atishi by choosing her to hoist the flag on Independence Day. Although the plan was stopped by Lieutenant Governor Saxena, it was clear that the party had great faith in her.

Kejriwal’s decision to step down comes just after he was granted bail by the Supreme Court in a corruption case. After being in jail for six months, Kejriwal said he would not return as Chief Minister until he wins the people’s approval in the upcoming elections. He stated that he wants justice from the people, not just the courts.

While the assembly elections in Delhi are scheduled for February, Kejriwal has asked for them to be held earlier, in November, alongside elections in Maharashtra. Both Kejriwal and Sisodia want to seek public support before deciding on their future in politics.
