Atishi Takes Charge as Delhi Chief Minister: Third Woman to Lead the Capital, Retains Key Portfolios and Prepares for Upcoming Elections
Political climate of Delhi shifts dramatically as Atishi starts her term as the Chief Minister today after she was sworn into office on Saturday. She becomes the third woman to assume the state’s top executive office in Indian territory after Sheila Dikshit and Sushma Swaraj, eighth chief minister of the national capital. Atishi is presently an important member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has been responsible for managing AAP during Arvind Kejriwal’s imprisonment in the excise policy case.

At a special function held in Raj Niwas, Atishi was surrounded by her newly sworn-in team of ministers that include familiar faces such as Gopal Rai and Kailash Gahlot on the board along with newcomer Mukesh Ahlawat. The AAP legislature party then unanimously chose Atishi as their leader to ensure that they are prepared for the numerous activities that lie ahead. Being retained in 13 important portfolios that she served under the previous administration such as education, finance, and power, Atishi is ready for a set of backlogged projects and programs anticipated in Delhi before the elections due in February 2025.

The new cabinet faces great challenges to immediately address service delivery and development agenda in the country. Thus it will be imperative to see that what strategy Atishi will adopt when she will start this pivotal journey as people of Delhi will surely be eagerly waiting to see how she will further take Delhi and its administration on further developing phase in the coming months.
