In a global call for compassion, the Delhi CM highlights India's anguish as its citizens confront the looming specter of the death penalty in Qatar
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal expressed concern about Indian citizens facing the death penalty in Qatar
ArvindKejriwal:
On Thursday, Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Delhi’s Chief Minister, expressed deep apprehension regarding the fate of eight Indian nationals who have received death sentences in Qatar, allegedly for espionage. He urged the Central government to exert all possible efforts to secure their release.
Kejriwal’s statement pertains to the recent sentencing of eight former Indian Navy personnel in Qatar, who were detained in August 2022. The Indian government has been actively working to secure their release. These ex-Navy individuals were employed by Dahra Global, a Doha-based company specializing in providing comprehensive support solutions to the security, aerospace, and defense sectors.
https://t.co/LWaNOImw4P

India has conveyed its profound dismay in response to the verdict. The Union Ministry of External Affairs has emphasized the utmost importance of this case and is actively examining all available legal avenues. The ministry stated, “We are deeply startled by the death penalty verdict and await the comprehensive judgment. We maintain close contact with the affected family members and legal representatives as we explore all potential legal recourse.”
The Delhi CM has expressed significant concern for India due to its nationals facing the death penalty in Qatar. This verdict has put India’s relationship with a influential Gulf state to the test and challenges New Delhi’s approach in fostering friendly ties.
Qatar has played a pivotal role in mediating during various geopolitical conflicts, from hosting the Taliban’s diplomatic mission in Doha to facilitating negotiations for the release of hostages in Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas conflict. New Delhi’s efforts to reverse the verdict and ensure the safe return of its citizens will demonstrate its diplomatic capabilities and its relationship with the Qatari establishment.
