Delhi Struggles as Cold Wave and Dense Fog Disrupt Travel, Plunge Air Quality to Severe Levels

A thick blanket of fog enveloped Delhi on Friday morning, bringing with it a freezing start to the day as officials said that visibility in several areas had been reduced to near-zero levels. The biting cold came with a sharp drop in temperature, with mercury plummeting to 7 degrees Celsius at 5:30 a.m. This marked yet another episode of the cold wave gripping the national capital, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Travel Chaos Due to Fog

The dense fog significantly disrupted travel plans for many. Flight operations at the Delhi Airport were severely impacted, prompting airport authorities to issue an advisory for passengers. The statement noted that while flights compliant with CAT III protocols could operate, departures faced delays. Passengers were advised to contact their respective airlines for the latest updates regarding their flights.

“Due to dense fog, flights are being impacted for departure, but CAT III compliant flights are landing and taking off. The passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines for more information. Regret any inconvenience caused,” said the advisory.

Equally, the train services were not spared either as many delays were reported at the key railway stations to include New Delhi Railway Station, Anand Vihar Terminus, and Hazrat Nizamuddin Station. The ill combination of fog and plunging temperatures further compounded the inconveniences of city commuters.

Bad air quality levels.

Meanwhile, with a cold wave and fog having gripped the city, Delhi’s air quality further deteriorated to pour into the ‘severe’ category, said the Central Pollution Control Board, which recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 409 at 7 am, a sharp decline from the ‘very poor’ AQI of 299 reported the previous day.

An AQI between 401-500 falls under the ‘severe’ category and may cause severe health issues to the residents, especially those with respiratory or cardiac conditions. This is a significant drop, which shows that the dual challenge of fighting extreme weather and hazardous pollution levels.
