Delhi Records Season’s Lowest Temperature of 4.5°C Amid Cold Wave Alert, Chill Extends to Rajasthan
Delhi residents woke up to an unprecedented chill as the capital recorded a morning temperature of 4.5 degrees Celsius on Thursday, marking the season’s lowest temperature. The India Meteorological Department confirmed that this morning was the coldest of the season, following a similar drop to 4.9 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. These temperatures signify the first instance in 14 years where early December lows have dipped below the 5-degree mark.

Historically, the lowest recorded minimum temperature for this season was on December 6, 1987. The mercury plummeted to just 4.1 degrees Celsius for the first time this season. The situation of the cold wave has been depicted by these plummeting temperatures prompting the IMD to issue a cold wave alert that will persist till tomorrow. Such alert helps in preparing the public for extreme situations, and the necessary precautions take place to minimize the destructive effects of the cold waves.

Cold waves are actually defined by the IMD as instances where the minimum temperature deviates from the normal day temperature by 4.5 to 6.4 degrees Celsius. Should the negative departure exceed 6.4 degrees Celsius, it is classified as a “severe cold wave.” This can be used to classify how intense the cold is, and measures are then taken to protect the population.
In addition to Delhi, parts of Rajasthan have also seen a sharp drop in temperature over the last 24 hours till 8:30 am on Wednesday. The Jaipur Met Department said Sikar recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 1.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday night. While the general weather condition across Rajasthan was mainly dry, the extreme cold wave conditions were reported at one or two places, while several other places witnessed cold wave conditions. Minimum temperatures in different parts of Rajasthan were between 1.5 and 10.8 degrees Celsius, showing the spread impact of the cold spell.
Interestingly, December 2023 and 2022 did not report any cold wave days while November 2020 witnessed cold wave conditions as temperature had fallen to 7.5 degrees Celsius. Cold waves during this year have yet again made one feel the variation in the patterns of the weather and the preparedness in hand to face sudden variations in temperature.
In a bid to prepare for continued cold wave conditions, expected to persist until December 13, authorities have begun telling residents to take necessary precautions, among which wearing adequate warm clothing and not keeping themselves outside for long will come as part of the recommended steps, besides access to heating facilities among vulnerable groups. The weather department remains vigilant, continues to observe the situation, and issue periodic updates so that the people get informed in advance and act accordingly and remain safe and secure.
