Delhi rain: Air quality hits year’s best; Gurugram waterlogging woes continue. IMD predicts more rainfall | 10 updates
For the past several days, Delhi and its bordering National Capital Region (NCR) have received more rain than the city’s annual and seasonal averages for September.
According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi received more than 1,000mm of rain this month, the most since 2021 and the second highest in at least a decade. Meanwhile, the weather service predicts further heavy showers throughout Saturday.
The constant rainfall has also resulted in the national capital inhaling the cleanest air of the year thus far. Following the rain, the Air Quality Index (AQI) fell to 52, the lowest level recorded this season. According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI peaked at 45 on September 10, 2023. On Friday, the city’s maximum temperature plummeted to 27.6 degrees Celsius, six notches below normal. According to the IMD, the minimum temperature is forecast to be 21 degrees Celsius on Saturday, with a maximum of 32 degrees Celsius.

The IMD has issued a ‘orange’ weather advisory for Saturday, anticipating heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lighting in the city. Continuous rains in Delhi-NCR resulted in severe waterlogging, underpass closures, traffic jams, and occasional visibility reductions. Due to the rain, a flight was diverted at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport on Friday. However, according to officials, overall flight operations were unaffected.
A senior traffic police officer stated that during the evening, traffic from the lane towards Delhi was obstructed at the Sirhaul border, Rajiv Chowk, Narsinghpur, and several other sites, as reported by PTI. Additionally, due to the intense rain, pedestrians and non-motorized transportation (NMT) were unable to use the subways.
