Delhi MCD Scuffle: “Physically Assaulted” Claims Mayor Shelly Oberoi
Delhi MCD Scuffle: Water bottles, apples thrown and kurtas torn
Delhi MCD Scuffle: On February 24, a case against Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) council members was filed at the Kamla Market police station by newly elected Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Sarika Choudhary and Ashu Thakur. The development came after a scuffle within MCD House, during which a BJP council member “physically assaulted” female AAP members, claimed Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi.

The commotion in the House has continued for three days. Leaders of the AAP announced a re-election for February 27. In contrast, the BJP announced it would ask the court to halt the elections on Saturday.
Oberoi claimed that she was attacked by BJP members Chandan Choudhary, Arjun Marwah, and Ravi Negi. She called the events the “darkest day of democracy.”
According to Shelly Oberoi, the BJP attacked the chair after realising they would lose the standing committee poll. AAP officials claim that BJP councillor Arjun Marwah attacked the Delhi Mayor as she was leaving the MCD House under guard.
After the Mayor declared that the standing committee poll had been postponed for the day, the decision to file the FIR against the BJP council members was made.
“Elections for the standing committee were held to satisfy BJP demands. However, they made a scene and approached the stage to attack me. I’m grateful to the female Civil Defence workers who saved me. BJP members violently abused female AAP members. BJP accepts your loss,” Shelly Oberoi told the media.

Meanwhile, The BJP tweeted a picture of the poster that included Atishi with the caption, “AAP’s villainess, who caused the MCD house scuffle.” On the poster, the incident is referred to as the most shocking drama of 2023, featuring images of Atishi and BJP council members. It claimed that Atishi played the villain in a film produced by the AAP and directed by the party leader Arvind Kejriwal.

The incident that led the mayor to adjourn the House was blamed on the BJP and the AAP.
Council members from both parties can be seen punching each other in one video while throwing water bottles and apples at one another in the House. A few council members could be seen with their kurtas torn, while other BJP members waved banners with slogans like “Tanashahi Nahin Chalegi.”

Saurabh Bharadwaj claims that AAP received 138 votes in poll of 6 members of Delhi MCD Standing Committee and BJP has received lesser. He says, “AAP has 134 Councillors, one joined BJP. Since Congress Councillors not here, it means there are some BJP Councillors who voted for AAP.
Delhi MCD scuffle had started much before the Delhi Mayor elections and the voting has been suspended three times. After the Supreme Court stepped in, the voting began fourth time and AAP’s Shelly Oberioi became new mayor. It seems that ruckus is because BJP is losing on the numbers in MCD which they controlled for almost 15 years.
