Delhi Government Enhances Mpox Preparedness: AIIMS Issues Treatment Protocol, Isolation Rooms Set Up in Three Hospitals, and Dedicated Referral System Established
Due to the rising cases of Mpox (Monkeypox) across the world, the Delhi government has acted swiftly to prepare for any contingencies in Delhi. While no Mpox cases have been reported in Delhi yet, officials are preparing for possible cases by ensuring they are equipped for the situation.

AIIMS Delhi Protocol for Mpox Management: This comes after the management of AIIMS Delhi provided extensive guidelines for suspected Mpox patients on Tuesday. The protocol focuses on outlines of the identification, isolation, and treatment of people who could be infected with the virus. 1. Screening in Triage Area: Fever, rash and prior exposure to confirmed Mpox patients should be also evaluated by a physician. Some fundamental signs include fever, headache, muscle ache and pains in the back, enlarged lymph nodes, chills, fatigue and the skin rash which may progress from maculopapular rash to vesicular and pustular stages.
2. Isolation and Holding Areas: Based on the Mpox transmission dynamics, any patient suspected to be having Mpox is to be isolated in particular areas as soon as possible. Special beds have been designated for this reason, namely the AB-7 no. 33-37. These beds will accommodate the patients for a short term before they will be shifted to Safdarjung Hospital for further treatment.
3. Notification and Referral: Any suspected case of Mpox has to be reported to the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP). If any, basic data of the patient incorporated by clinical findings and contact particulars should be disclosed. The largest treatment centre for Mpox patients is the Safdarjung Hospital. An ambulance service has been also arranged for the transportation of patients from other associated hospitals to Safdarjung Hospital so that they can be attended to as early as possible in case of emergencies.

4. Patient Handling and Documentation: Adequate measures to control infection must be implemented among them being that the healthcare staff works under PPE. The documentation of patient information, sign and symptoms, and referral activity is highly important in order to enable proper control and monitoring.
