Delhi’s 2025 Assembly elections saw 60.4% voter turnout, the lowest since 2008, with district variations
Delhi witnessed a voter turnout of 60.4% in the 2025 Assembly elections, marking the lowest participation since 2008 when only 57.8% of voters cast their ballots. A total of 1.56 crore voters were eligible to decide the fate of 699 candidates contesting for 70 seats in the capital.
Among Delhi’s districts, North East Delhi recorded the highest turnout at 66.25%, while South East Delhi saw the lowest at 56.31%. At the constituency level, Mustafabad in North East Delhi led with 69% voter participation, while Mehrauli in South West Delhi had the lowest turnout at 53.04%.
This year’s turnout is slightly higher than the 58.6% recorded during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections but lower than the 62.8% seen in the 2020 Assembly polls. In 2013 and 2015, Delhi saw higher turnouts of 66% and 67.5%, respectively.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) stated that the turnout figures are provisional and will be updated soon. ECI director Anuj Chandak explained that officials are finalizing forms, sealing EVMs, and transporting them securely to designated centers.
Over 2 lakh first-time voters participated in the elections, which were held across 13,766 polling stations. Voting took place from 7 am to 6 pm, with the results set to be announced on February 8.

The elections saw intense campaigning by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Congress, with each party making promises targeting women and youth. While the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer called the voting process “peaceful,” the AAP alleged that voters in its strongholds faced inconvenience and accused the BJP of distributing money in some areas. The BJP denied these allegations.
Prominent figures, including President Droupadi Murmu, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, as well as Union Ministers S. Jaishankar and Hardeep Singh Puri, were among the early voters.
The elections highlighted the challenges of voter engagement, with turnout declining over the years. As Delhi awaits the results, the focus remains on whether the AAP can retain its hold, the BJP can make gains, or the Congress can stage a comeback. The outcome will shape the capital’s political landscape for the next five years.
