India warns Pakistan at the UNGA about cross-border terrorism, asserting it will lead to serious consequences for Pakistan.
India’s Firm Stance at the UNGA: A Warning to Pakistan Over Cross-Border Terrorism and Its Consequences
At the UNGA, India gave a stern message to Pakistan in response to PM Shehbaz Sharif’s comments regarding Jammu, and Kashmir. India’s First Secretary to the UN Bhavika Mangalanandan said that Pakistan’s continued support to cross border terrorism ‘will attract repercussions.’ This statement came following Sharif’s appeal for India to annul the 2019 scrapping of Article 370 that downgraded the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as his demands for resumed talks between the two countries.

To this Mangalanandan had a stinging reply and he focused on the fact that Pakistan had been a state sponsor of terrorism. She criticized the cheek of a country renowned for terrorism, drug peddling and international organized crime to cast aspersions on India, a country which is the largest democracy in the world. Her statement stood tall in contradiction with the realities of Pakistan and how it had directly participated in terrorist attacks such as the Indian Parliament attack in 2001 and the Mumbai attack in 2008; she said that there are fingerprints of Pakistani involvement in several terrorist attacks around the world.

Besides, India rejected any nascent ‘Strategic Restraint Regime’ with Pakistan unless terrorism is eliminated. Mangalanandan therefore explained that “there can be no compact with terrorism.” She also brought to their attention Pakistan’s history of sheltering Osama bin laden, and continued human rights violations which made their criticisms of India and other nations ridiculous. To this, Pakistan’s representatives described India’s allegations as unfounded and misleading and called for holding the referendum in the territory of Jammu and Kashmir in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions. The dialogue at the UNGA presents the underlying hostility and the conflicting discourses that have characterised the India-Pakistan relationship.
