We live in an age of false news and intolerant people: CJI Chandrachud

CJI Chandrachud warns of the danger of false news and social media

CJI Chandrachud while speaking at the American Bar Association (ABA) Conference said,Truth has become a victim in an age of false news.

On February 23, 2023, CJI DY Chandrachud inaugurated a three-day international conference on “Law in the Age of Globalisation: Convergence of India and the West”.

CJI’s speech was full of metaphors that drive society. While answering a question regarding the lack of women in the judiciary, the CJ remarked, “Unless there was a level playing field for women to enter the legal profession and to thrive in the legal profession between 2000 and 2023, there is no magic wand by which you will have more Supreme Court judges drawn from among women in 2023.”

He added that recruitment to the judiciary is often drawn directly through the district judiciary and that recent statistics indicated that in many states, over 50-60% of recruits were women. “It is for us to ensure conditions of dignity for people we recruit,” CJI said.

CJI also discussed how technology has impacted our lives and how the challenge of our age is the retreat of humanity within itself

Chief Justice stated, “When the constitution was drafted, our constitution makers possibly had no idea on lines on which humanity will evolve. We didn’t possess notions of privacy, there was no internet or social media. We didn’t live in a world controlled by algorithms. Something which is said as a seed on social media can germinate into a theory which can never be tested.”

Speaking on the state of media in the country, the CJI cautioned the people, “We live in an age where people are short on their patience & tolerance. We are not willing to accept perspectives which are different from our own. Some of this is a product of technology itself perhaps. Truth has become a victim in an age of false news.”

While referring to terrorism and particularly the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Centre in 2001, the Chief Justice stated, “There has been a surge in anti-globalisation sentiment. The first of the origins of this lay in the terror attacks of 2001 in New York. Our country was shaken by those terror attacks but it was a watershed moment which brought to the global society the stark realities which India had already confronted for years before that.”
