CIA’s Shadow Over Bangladesh: Army Chief Accused of Betraying Hasina by Ex-Home Minister

Bangladesh’s ex-Home Minister claims CIA plotted coup with Bangladesh Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman to oust Hasina.

CIA’s Role in Bangladesh Coup? Ex-Home Minister Accuses Bangladesh Army Chief of Betraying Hasina in Explosive Revelation

The CIA Allegations That Shook Bangladesh

In a shocking revelation that has sent tremors through South Asian political circles, Bangladesh’s former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has claimed that the recent power shift in Dhaka was part of a “perfect CIA plot.” According to excerpts from the yet-to-be-released book Inshallah Bangladesh: The Story of an Unfinished Revolution by Deep Halder, Jaideep Mazumdar, and Sahidul Hasan Khokon, Kamal alleges that Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman, who happens to be a relative of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, played a key role in her downfall while allegedly being “in the CIA’s pockets.”

Bangladesh Army Chief ‘On CIA Payroll’?

The book quotes Kamal from a confidential meeting in a Delhi coffee shop, where he describes the coup as a meticulously executed operation. “It was a perfect CIA plot hatched over time to overthrow Hasina. We didn’t know Waker was in their pocket,” Kamal said. He further alleged that both Bangladesh’s Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and the National Security Intelligence (NSI) failed to alert Hasina about Waker’s betrayal. The former minister went on to suggest that top intelligence officers may have been complicit in the coup, hinting at a deeper web of international manipulation.

The U.S. Angle: Geopolitics Behind the Plot

When asked about Washington’s possible motivation, Kamal connected the dots between global power dynamics and regional influence. He claimed that the U.S. aimed to weaken South Asia’s strong leadership trio—Narendra Modi, Xi Jinping, and Sheikh Hasina—to assert its dominance in the region. But the immediate trigger, he revealed, was St. Martin’s Island—a tiny but strategically significant landmass in the Bay of Bengal, close to Myanmar. Hasina herself had earlier alleged that Washington pressured her to hand over the island, but she refused, saying it would compromise Bangladesh’s sovereignty. The island’s location, vital for naval dominance in the Indian Ocean amid China’s expanding influence, adds weight to Kamal’s explosive statements.

Internal Crisis and the Role of Waker-Uz-Zaman

The revelations come at a time when the Bangladesh Army, under General Waker-Uz-Zaman, faces growing scrutiny. Recently, fifteen officers were detained for their alleged role in the enforced disappearances of Hasina’s political opponents. Lead author Deep Halder highlighted how these developments have blurred the line between military and political power in Bangladesh. “Waker was appointed by Hasina herself before her ouster. The irony is hard to miss,” Halder noted. The controversy also deepens with the ongoing presidency of Md Sahabuddin, who has been accused of failing to keep the army apolitical.

A ‘Mahabharata Moment’: How the Betrayal Unfolded

Kamal compared the political downfall to a scene from the Mahabharata, saying, “Like Abhimanyu trapped in battle, Hasina was surrounded by her own.” He claimed that Waker joined hands with radical Islamist groups, including the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, and worked with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to destabilize the government. Reports cited in the book mention that ISI-trained operatives had infiltrated student movements and carried out targeted violence against the police, escalating national unrest. Despite repeated warnings from Kamal and other top officials, Hasina was assured by Waker that the army would “control the situation.”

The Final Night Before Hasina’s Exit

On August 4, 2024, a critical meeting was held at Gonobhaban, Hasina’s residence, to assess the volatile situation. Kamal proposed police deployment around Dhaka and the prime minister’s residence. However, Waker reportedly advised against it, insisting that the army could handle the crisis. Hasina, trusting her handpicked army chief, accepted the advice—a decision that would prove fatal to her leadership. The very next day, Hasina was forced to flee the country, marking the culmination of what Kamal now calls a betrayal “from within.”

The Fallout and the Questions Ahead

The allegations made by Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal have sparked intense debate across Bangladesh and beyond. If proven, this could be one of the most significant cases of foreign interference in South Asian politics in recent history. The combination of alleged CIA involvement, military betrayal, and geopolitical intrigue paints a complex picture of Bangladesh’s current turmoil. As the book Inshallah Bangladesh nears release, the country stands at a crossroads—caught between questions of loyalty, sovereignty, and the long shadow of international power games.
