Canada PM Mark Carney says the deep economic and security ties with the US are over after Trump’s 25% auto tariffs, vowing strong retaliation.

Canada PM Mark Carney Declares End of Close Ties With US After Trump Imposes 25% Auto Tariffs

Longstanding economics and security ties with Canada have been grievously bruised by the announcement of steep auto tariffs on Canadian imports by US President Donald Trump. On Thursday, Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney stated at a press conference that this era of closeness held between two neighbours was finally over.

This looks to be heavy. A 25% tariff was suddenly placed on car imports from Canada, effective next week. Given the fact that the auto industry supports about 500,000 jobs, the new tariff would seem to severely disrupt the industry and put thousands of those jobs in jeopardy. The surprise placement of the tariff had made Carney leave his Election campaign trail to return to Ottawa for cabinet-level discussions on how Canada should respond to this trade war unfolding on an alarming level.

He called Trump’s tariffs “unjustifiable,” fiercely reprimanding the US for violating the terms of their current free trade agreements. Carney went on to tell Canadians that their relationship with the United States had undergone a profound transformation that would preclude a return to their previous level of economic and security cooperation. “The old relationship we had with the United States based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation is over,” he declared.

The Prime Minister went on to announce that Canada would respond to the tariffs by imposing counter-measures geared to hit the US economy hard and spare major damage for Canadian businesses. “We will fight the US tariffs with retaliatory trade actions of our own that will have maximum impact in the United States and minimum impact here in Canada,” he asserted.

Since taking office, it has been unusual that Carney has not formally engaged President Trump; usually, new Canadian leaders quickly try to put their imprint on the bilateral relationship by talking to the US President. Carney, however, did say that a request was made by the White House to set up a call with him, and that he expected it to take place in the next two days.

Although it was expected, Carney remains heavy about not engaging in any significant commercial negotiation unless the US shows real respect for Canada’s sovereignty. He said that when and if negotiations do begin, the aim must not just be trade, but also security issues. “For me, there are two conditions, not necessarily for a call, but a negotiation with the United States. First, respect—respect for our sovereignty as a country… apparently, that’s a lot for him,” Carney remarked extremely.

The ongoing dispute around tariffs will be remembered as a crucial turning point in US-Canada relations a lot more assertive stance in terms of protecting its economic interests. Both sides now seem poised for a lengthy confrontation, the consequences of which will reshape North-American trading relations for years to come.
