BRICS: “President Ramaphosa and Prime Minister Modi discuss bilateral relations, regional and global issues”

Prime Minister Modi met President Ramaphosa while in South Africa. They talked about their shared excitement for the upcoming G20 Summit in New Delhi, bilateral connections, cooperation among the Global South, the G20 presidency, and the membership of the African Union in the G20.

In a private meeting on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is on a three-day trip to South Africa and Greece discussed ways to strengthen the voice of the Global South as well as the development of their bilateral relations with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. They also discussed regional and international issues.

Taking to X ,PM Modi saidthat he had a wonderful meeting with President @CyrilRamaphosa. We spoke on a variety of topics aimed at strengthening ties between South Africa and India. Links between trade, defense, and investment took center stage in our conversations. To enhance the voice of the Global South as well, we’ll maintain cooperating. 

Both leaders “reviewed the progress made in bilateral relations between the two countries and expressed satisfaction at the progress achieved in various fields including defense, agriculture, trade and investment, health, conservation, and people-to-people ties,” according to a press release from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Additionally, Mr. Modi and Mr. Ramaphosa discussed issues of shared interest on the regional and global levels as well as the need for sustained coordination in multilateral organizations. The release stated that Mr. Ramaphosa gave his full support to India’s G20 presidency and that he appreciated India’s initiative to grant the African Union full participation in the G-20. The release also stated that the president expressed excitement about traveling to New Delhi for the G-20 Summit.

Ramaphosa reaffirmed his unwavering support for India’s G20 presidency and praised New Delhi for taking the initiative to grant the African Union full membership in the club of the world’s 20 largest economies.

In a letter sent recently to the heads of the G20 nations, Modi requested their backing for a proposal to grant the African Union full membership at the group’s upcoming summit in September.
