Early Life and Influences

Born on 3rd January 1831, Naigaon, Maharashtra, Savitribai grew up in a society that is strongly rooted with social inequality. As early as the age of nine, she got married to her eventual greatest helpmate, Jyotirao Phule, who would accompany her in changing society. Still, Savitribai could not ignore the burning desire within her for seeking knowledge. On Jyotirao’s instigation, she pursued studies-a feat even by the contemporary standard for the female gender of that time.

Savitribai education formed the bedrock of her life as a reformer. She realized that ignorance, coupled with illiteracy, was the biggest obstacle to societal progress, especially amongst women and all low-caste people. The realization led her to dedicate herself to education and social change.

Pioneer in Women’s Education

In 1848, Savitribai and Jyotirao Phule opened the first girls’ school in Pune against stiff social resistance. A pioneering effort in India, it started the revolution for women’s education. She was the first teacher in that school as well as a revolutionary effort to make the system fair for everyone.

She did not confine herself to teaching alone. Savitribai wrote several books and poems in which she elaborated on the emancipatory power of education. She felt that education alone could free society from all sorts of evils and bring women into equality with men. Savitribai was subjected to ridicule, verbal abuse, and even physical attacks by orthodox sections, but she did not budge from her objective.

Social Reformer

The work of Savitribai Phule was not only in the sphere of education. She was a strong campaigner for the rights of Dalits and other oppressed castes. Along with Jyotirao, she challenged the very deep-seated caste system and tried to establish a society on the principles of equality and justice.

She was an active participant in abolition movements against discriminatory practices, such as the anti-untouchability movement and the anti-child marriage movement. Savitribai had stood for widow remarriage, which came in stark contrast to the beliefs of her time.
She had created the “Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha” or the house against infanticide. In this venture, she took pregnant widows under her roof and ensured the security of their children.

A Model in Adversity

The face of Savitribai emerged strong in the year 1897, with her standing strong even in the times of famine, which led to the subsequent epidemic of bubonic plague. She established clinics, risked her own life to heal others, and died eventually because of selfless service during the plague on 10 March 1897, when she contracted the disease taking care of one of her patients, which ultimately gave her the status of a true humanitarian.

Durable Legacy

The legacy of Savitribai Phule has left indelible marks on Indian society. She has been termed as the “Mother of Indian Feminism” as she was among the first ones to fight for gender equality and paved the path for future movements in social reforms. Her contributions continue to inspire activists, educators, and policymakers in their efforts for social change.

Today, numerous institutions and organizations bear her name, honoring her legacy. Her birth anniversary serves as a reminder of the power of education and the importance of standing against injustice. Savitribai’s life story teaches us that change is possible, even in the face of overwhelming odds, when driven by courage and conviction.

Today is the 194th birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule. We remember this great social reformer who never compromised with anyone on her stand. She is the beacon for a better tomorrow and continues to inspire people even today. She wanted an enlightened society that could provide equality and education to everyone. It’s relevant today just as it was then. Let us all move ahead by following her ideals towards a future with equality, education, and social justice.
