Birsa Munda: The Tribal Hero Who Shaped India’s History
Born in 1875, on 15 November, Birsa Munda was a leader and freedom fighter representing the symbol of resistance against British imperialism. The Munda is one of the tribes of Jharkhand, and the revolutionary spirit from this tribe by Birsa started the Munda revolt in late 19th century. He led them to resist the exploitation by the British government and missionaries of their land and culture. Birsa’s revolt was a high-intensity desire for preserving the way of life, lands, and traditions against colonization forces.

Birsa Munda did his journey of life by remaining a stiff opposition movement against the British education system, which was converting tribals into Christians. After a brief period at a Christian mission school, he rejected the education system enforced by the British and instead found a new faith for his people, which later came to be known as the Birsa faith. His movement won sympathy from the Munda people on a large scale and emerged as a big challenge to the colonial rulers.

Birth to Rebellion

Birsa had established himself as a liberator beside some of the most honored freedom fighters of India with his just cause of keeping tribal identity and autonomy intact. The Prime Minister has already begun Vikshit Bharat Sankalp Yatra, common activities being street play, personal stories, and quizzes, aimed at making the people aware of the positive factors that have arisen from government initiatives in the next two months in rural and tribal areas.

Central schemes such as sanitation, health, electricity, LPG cylinders, and clean drinking water also would improve the lives of citizens in tribal areas. Keeping with the government’s commitments toward tribals’ welfare, participation would be encouraged through the yatra, and success stories of tribal families who are benefited by them would be covered.

Though there has been progress, some tribal activists have continued to vocally seek official recognition of the Sarna religion. Such activists have made threats of self-immolation and are on fast to try and raise the cause in Jharkhand and other states. This welfare scheme’s launch and the continued dialogue with the tribal people reflect the sincerity of the government in dealing with these issues and making sure that tribal people don’t lag behind other citizens in the development journey of the country.
