Patna District Magistrate Orders Immediate Closure of 124 Coaching Centres Following Safety Concerns and Compliance Failures

The Patna District Administration has reacted in the aftermath of one of the worstet coaching centre tragedy that claimed three civil service aspirants in Delhi by taking stringent measures to regulate and check for safety compliance of such centers in the state capital. On August 9, District Magistrate DM of Patna, Chandrashekhar Singh, declared that 124 bogus coaching centres did not qualify for registration. This process was conducted after carrying out an assessment of 138 applications where fourteen of them were rejected due to non-functionality while the rest did not meet the required criteria.

This, however, is not an isolated case as since the beginning of the term the administration has been on an inspection spree where all the coaching centers in Patna are being checked on their documents and infrastructure. The DM made it clear that, all eretail coaching centres that are running without proper registration must get themselves registered otherwise they will be shut down.

As earlier highlighted, during a meeting attended by the DM as the chair of the registration committee of the district coaching institute, the list detailing the 124 centres which have been deregistered was distributed to the relevant enforcement officials. The applications declined were mostly on account of substandard infrastructural facilities as envisaged under Section 9 of the Bihar Coaching Institute (Control and Regulation) Act, 2010.

In the last 10 days, Marjan has approved 413 of the 936 new applications for registration, and she has currently pending 523 applications. The inspection drive has also revealed other offences such as many centers found operating from basins and crowded places, which goes against the law today. The administration has pledged to keep making more efforts to ensure that they close all those centres that are operating illegally and those that have failed to meet safety and legal measures.
