Bangladesh has officially acknowledged the recent surge in communal violence targeting Hindus and other minorities. The government confirmed that 88 incidents of attacks have taken place since August 5, resulting in the filing of 88 cases and the arrest of 70 individuals.
These incidents have sparked widespread concern, both domestically and internationally. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri recently expressed India’s concerns regarding the safety and well-being of minority communities in Bangladesh .
Incidents of Communal Violence
The attacks on Hindus and other minorities have been reported in various parts of the country, including northeastern Sunamganj and central Gazipur. While the government has insisted that these attacks were not solely motivated by religious hatred, but also by personal disputes and political affiliations.
Government Response
The Bangladeshi government has assured that it is taking necessary measures to address the situation. Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam stated that the police are taking appropriate action, and the number of cases and arrests is likely to increase as new incidents are reported.
